Nasca Double Spout and Bridge Vessel with Birds and Anthropomorphic figure
Description
An account of the resource
This Nasca vessel has a sleek and economical form: the ceramic itself is not sculptural and emphasizes the use of 2-dimensional design in its style. A double spout and bridge that adorns the top of the vessel is the only part that is protruding from the piece. Polychromatic slips are used in the crafting process. Hues of yellow, red, blue, brown, creamy white, and black are present with varying levels of saturation. The reddish browns and the black hues are most vivid in the piece. The black slips are shown in heavy linework surrounding the images of the anthropomorphic figure and the birds on either side of the face, effectively creating contours that contribute to stylistic shading.
When viewing the vessel from the front side of its body, the focal point of the composition is the face of a figure, with birds positioned on either side of the being. However, the picture plane wraps around the top and sides of the body. The artist considers this composition from all sides of the vessel. It communicates a continuous and expansive, but still single, image. Observing the vessel with this fact in mind reveals that the anthropomorphic figure is arching itself over the ceramic body and appears to be weightless or floating. The feet do not meet the assumed ground of the picture plane. Birds placed adjacent to this imagery appear to be positioned in the same direction that the being is going. However, the exact spatial relationships between all the elements of the composition are ambiguous. The being has wide, almond shaped eyes and has many feline and raptorial features. The creature has gold accessories like a crown and animal whiskers. The creature adorns a cape with gold and beige circles and ends in two long fringes that frame the trophy heads which can be seen on the side opposite the figure's face. Many geometric shapes like circles and triangles appear in the imagery. The striped ‘signifiers’ on either side of the creature’s face end in sharp talons holding the two wide-beaked birds. There are two disc-shaped ear accessories protruding from the creature’s head.

Nasca double spout and bridge with anthropomorphic masked being and chilli peppers
Description
An account of the resource
This double-spout-and-bridge vessel originates from the Nasca culture that dominated the southern Peruvian coast from 200 BCE to 600 CE. This vessel most likely belongs to the Middle Nasca period due to the broad range of colors and the presence of more proliferous elements and abstract composite beings. However, it is also likely this vessel represents a transitional stage from the Early Nasca period because of characteristics like a lighter background, black outlines around the designs, and naturalistic elements such as chili peppers and snakes. Typically, Nasca ceramics intended to display a dual symbolism between the natural world and their religious beliefs due to the cultural importance of agricultural fertility. The Nasca were accustomed to living in unique environmental conditions considering the effects of the harsh desert climate, the unpredictable water supply, and El Nino events could have on their crops and wildlife. In light of this erratic natural environment, it is understandable that the Nasca would focus on themes of abundance, agriculture, and survival in their ceramics.
The iconography of this vessel consists of Anthropomorphic Mythical Being and the harvesting of chili peppers. An important plant in Andean cultures, the chili pepper, or aji, was used for cooking and as a preservative. In the bottom register of this vessel, the chili peppers are alternating in color and separated by vertical lines. These vertical lines reference agricultural planting rows where the Nasca used their puquios as an irrigation system for crops, such as chili peppers. Standing on top of the field motif, is a harvester anthropomorphic mythical being (AMB) holding two chili peppers in each hand. Unlike most AMB’s, this one is depicted with a human body and exemplifies some characteristics of the Harvester motifs such as the outstretched arms with crops in hand as well as a similar styled loin cloth and mouth. This figure also demonstrates common attributes of AMB’s like a gold mouth mask, forehead ornamentation, a spondylus shell necklace, and a striped tunic. A hybrid of these two motifs is further suggested by the agricultural designs found at the bottom of the figures tunic. These designs resemble seeds displayed in other Nasca ceramics promoting the overall theme of agricultural fertility in this particular vessel.
The presences of serpents protruding out of the figures head and along the sides of the tunic enhance the idea of agricultural abundance. Serpents in Andean cultures were associated with fertility, water, and regeneration, thus the appearance of serpents in this vessel symbolizes an act of spiritual forces calling for agricultural bounty. This relationship between human activity and spiritual forces collide in the supernatural image of the harvester AMB, as a mythical force used to help the Nasca in their need for agricultural prosperity. The visual dynamism of this vessel infuses naturalistic and mythical qualities to support the message of agricultural dependence and the Nasca’s need for survival.

Nasca double spout and bridge vessel with human heads and mythical beings
Description
An account of the resource
This object is from the Andean south coast from the late Nasca period in the shape of a double spout and bridge vessel, with two spouts connected by its handle. The object’s polychromatic appearance is made from slip paints applied before firing. The colors on this object include hues such as red, yellow, and white, with the designs being done by black outlines. The surface of the object appears glossy from burnishing the object after the slips were almost dried. The iconography features anthropomorphic mythical beings on the upper region of the vessel and trophy heads on the lower region in a horizontal row separated by a black line.
These anthropomorphic mythical beings are seen with their tongues sticking out - a quality of beings known as ‘trophy head tasters.’ In this case, instead of connecting to a trophy head, their tongues connect the abstract AMB faces to each other. This is also known as “proliferous style”, seen in the abstract nature of the AMB’s. These beings are known for having supernatural connotations. They are human-like figures that are an aspect of Nasca religious thought. Another iconographic feature is that of the masks on the anthropomorphic mythical beings. These masks are very feline-like which is a prominent feature found across most Nasca ceramics. The masks portrayed in this late Nasca style usually take over the entire face of the AMB and become one and the same with each creature. These AMB’s are also usually portrayed with a wide-eye look. The faces lined up at the bottom of the ceramic depict the trophy/decapitated heads. They all are portrayed with a blank stare, along with whisker-like lines coming out from their faces. A reason for them being portrayed beneath the AMB’s could be to show the duality between the supernatural world above, and the human realm below (on earth).
